1959 NR 100 minutes
In pre-Civil War Kansas, megalomaniac Luke Darcy (Jeff Chandler) aims to take full control of the territory with the help of a band of the titular militant freedom fighters. But ex-convict Cam (Fess Parker) wants to stand in his way. Cam wants revenge for Luke's role in the death of his wife and the loss of his farm, but once he joins the Jayhawkers himself he wonders if it might be best to join Luke's cause. Nicole Maurey co-stars.
The 73rd Virgin sez...I remember this from my youth and I had some interest in Bloody Kansas, so thought I would give it a try. A slightly interesting plot line involving Jeff Chandler as a vaguely utopian cult leader/jayhawker raider is undercut by indescribably verbose and convoluted dialogue, very little action, and Fess Parker. Another reviewer describes him as wooden. That is too kind. He is the most uncharismatic actor to ever get his name above a title. One can imagine being caught in a small-town bar with him describing in great detail how he rebuilt his carburetor or something. Someday, a very good movie will be made about the horrors of pre-Civil War civil war in the territories but, hoo-boy, this is not it. 2 out of 5 stars.
